Mary Anita Clarice Steele Evans, 87, passed away at her home in Nicholasville KY on Thursday, December 20th. She was born in Perry County, the third child of Julius C. (Doc) Steele and Mary Eversole Steele. Her father, a well-known civic and business leader, served as Municipal Judge and Mayor of the City of Hazard. He was President of the Hyden Citizens Bank, and operated drugstores in Hazard and Manchester. Mary Eversole’s family settled here at the end of the Eighteenth Century, and played a major role in the development of Perry County. The family homeplace, constructed above Chavies about 1800, still stands today as county’s oldest house. Anita’s parents’ ancestry include a number of notable Eastern Kentucky names, including Combs, Cornett, Couch, Lewis, Duff, McIntosh, Sizemore, and others.
Anita was schooled in Hazard before beginning high school at Sayre College in Lexington. She attended Centre College in Danville, KY, in 1938 where she studied Liberal Arts. In 1940 she transferred to the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1942.
While at the UK she was a member of the Wildcat Marching Band, Member of the Alpha Phi Delta sorority and the Phi Beta Honorary Fraternity for women. Following college, she with the Manhatten project at the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Commission in Tennessee from 1943-48. She returned to the University of Kentucky working for the Music Dept. until the 1960’s until she moved to Orlando Florida where she worked as an office manager for the Montgomery Ward Company.
In 1962, she married Carlton Fannin, After the death of Mr. Fannin and her retirement, she married William Evans of Georgia. They enjoyed traveling together visiting friends and family across the country.
In addition to her husbands Carlton and William, she was preceded in death by her brother, George Elmer Steele, in 1927, and her sister Cleo Dean in 2006. She is survived by nephews Richard Mandt and wife Judith, Edward J. Mandt & wife Martha, George W. Dean, five great nephews, their families and special friend Nellie Collins.
Graveside services will be held at Funeral services will be held at Englewood Cemetery in Hazard at 1:00 P.M. Thursday where she will lay in rest laid to rest with her beloved parents, and her brother, and sister. Services Pastor Lonnie Moore, Tabernacle Baptist Church Nicholasville, Ky. presiding.
In lieu of flowers, the family will welcome donations to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Christian Academy.
