November, 03, 1913 - April, 19, 2008
Nicholasville: Clara Elizabeth Brogli Thompson, 94, went home to be with her Lord on April 19, at St. Joseph Hospice Unit. Elizabeth put her faith in Jesus as her Savior as a youth and was baptized into the membership of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. She was the only daughter of Martin and Minnie Jackson Brogli of Garrard County. From the day of her birth, November 3, 1913, she was the center of her seven brothers life; their ‘Doll’ and ‘Sister’. She is survived by four of her brothers and two sisters in law; William, Vernon, and Herbert, wife Anne Brogli, all of Garrard County, Martin ‘Junior’ Brogli, FL., and Grace Brogli, FL.
She was predeceased by three brothers and five sisters in law; Isaiah and Mattie, Ottie and Hazel, Samuel, Gwendolyn and Agnes Brogli. Elizabeth was the devoted wife of Cleveland Thompson for almost 49 years until his home going in 1983. She was the proud Mother of four children; Carol Brown, (Charles deceased in 1988), Ann Nicholson (Bob), Minnie Cobb deceased in 2002 (Gordon) and C. B. Thompson (Patrice). She will be missed by twelve grandchildren; Jan Brown, Cliff Brown, Kim (Keith) Messmer, Kris Nicholson, Wesley Cobb, Ann (Kevin) Grimes, Fran (James) Brinn, Martin Cobb, Niki (Anthony) Gibson, Tevis Thompson, Tessa Thompson, and Tyler Thompson, twelve great-grandchildren; K.D. (Quintin) Ingram, Clay Kidwell, Tasha Liegel, Cole Liegel, Coulter Messmer, Sadie Hollon, Charlsie Hollon, Elijah Messmer, Austin Gibson, Isabella Grimes, Cassidi Brinn, and Skylar Gibson, and two great great grandchildren Luke Ingram and Hunter Kidwell.
Mrs. Thompson was an active member of Nicholasville Baptist Church for twenty-three years as she taught and directed Primary Sunday School and served in many other ways. She was the driving force in getting her husband and his brother and wife Henry and Beulah Thompson to donate land for the Church to start Edgewood Baptist Church of which Elizabeth was a charter member. Elizabeth served the Lord at Edgewood until her health made it impossible for her to continue. Elizabeth and Cleveland were involved in many businesses. Their first business began in 1937 on US 27 near Herrington Lake was Thompson’s Station. In 1947 they opened Thompson Market on Main Street in Nicholasville. They were the developers of Edgewood Estates and Edgewood Plaza where they built Thompson’ Foodtown. In early 1983 they began an even larger store to serve the expanding town of Nicholasville.
In October her beloved husband Cleveland died but with the help of her sons in law Gordon Cobb and Bob Nicholson, Elizabeth completed their dream and opened an even larger and better Thompson’s Foodtown to serve Jessamine County. In 1988 Elizabeth was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Jessamine Business Woman of the Year for her 51 years as a grocery retailer and then again in April 1994, the Jessamine Chamber honored her at their annual dinner by awarding her with the Hall of Fame Award. Elizabeth said they started Thompson Station in 1937 to have a living until they found something better but they found the best in serving their communities and knowing and having all the friends through all the years and she asked Gods blessing on all of them.
