Dora Katherine Rhorer Thomas died September 24, 2011 at her home on Lowry Lane in Wilmore, Kentucky. Dora was a life long resident of Jessamine County. Her ancestors came to Jessamine County in the year 1794. She was born on January 25, 1928 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Her parents were the late Thomas Jefferson and Elda Ruth Watson Rhorer. She was preceded in death by her sisters; Opal Mae Rhorer and Betty Margaret Johnson and brothers; Robert Brown & Thomas Byron Rhorer. She is survived by her husband of almost 64 years, James E. Thomas and three daughters; Margaret Louise Curtsinger, husband Robert of Wilmore, Sandra Ruth Wilkinson and Angie Beall Simpson both of Georgetown. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Dora attended elementary school at the Bethel School graduating in 1941 which was the last graduating class, graduated from Wilmore High School in 1945,. After high school she attended Crump Business College in Lexington, and worked several years for Butler Print Shop in Lexington. She met James in the fall of 1946 and they were married November 14, 1947. Dora was very active in PTA when her children were in school. She taught the girls at Wilmore elementary School 4-H. She was a member of the Wilmore United Methodist Church, a member of several civic groups including the VFW of which she is past president, the Daughters of the American Revolution of which she is a past Regent. She was also a charter member of the Wilmore Woman’s club, AARP, Historical Society, and the Cameo Club. The last ten years she worked was at Sims Drug Store in Wilmore where she was the bookkeeper. She is also a Kentucky Colonel. The family wishes to thank Hospice for their kind care during Dodie’s final days.
Honoring her as pallbearers are Jimmy Beckett, Jesse Kelsey, Joe Wilkinson, Scott Tillery, Kasey Varney, and James Rhorer. Visitation will be at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home on Monday September 26th 5-8 PM, and 9 AM Tuesday till time of funeral. Services will be at 10 AM on September 27th. The Reverend Leonard Fitch and Reverend Winston Smith will officiate. She will be laid to rest in the Wilmore Cemetery.
