Harlan Hale Veal, Sr., 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2012 following a short illness. He was a native of Lexington, Ky, born Nov. 30,. 1916 to the late Willmot Preston and Rae Belle Hale Veal. He was the widower of Willie Rogers Veal to whom he was married for 68 years before her death in 2008. He graduated from Bryan Station High School, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture during the 4 years at the University he lettered for his achievements in track. He taught Vocational Agriculture at Paint Lick High School, Flemingsburg High School, Wilmore, Nicholasville, Woodford County and Jessamine County High School where he retired in l978.

During his teaching career he excelled in leadership development of young men and women. Mr. Veal, along with his wife Willie, then built an outstanding real estate and auction business known as Veal Realtors and Auctioneers. He was also active in the affairs of city government in Nicholasville and served many years as a City Commissioner. He was an active member of Nicholasville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he was a member of the Men’s Class and was Elder Emeritas. Affectionately known as the

‘Colonel’, during his life he was a counselor to the many who sought his advice.

He is survived by 2 sons, Harlan H. Veal, Jr. and wife Phyllis, Willmot Preston (Press)Veal, a son-in-law, Wilson M. Routt, Jr., 7 grandchildren, Harlan H. Veal, III, Katherine Veal McCarty and husband Brian, Tami Anne Veal, Kristin Marie Routt Pendergrass, Leah Marshelle Veal, Preston Jarad Veal and Mary Elizabeth Veal Wiggins and husband Mark, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceeded in death a daughter Mary Lou Veal Routt, 3 sisters, Martha Veal Featherston, Grace Veal Featherston and Helen Veal Marrs.

Services will be at 1:00pm ,Mon, Jan. 30 at Nicholasville Christian Church. With Rev. Jeff Mandrell and Rev. John Todd officiating. Visitation will be from 1-5 on Sunday at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home, and 11-1 at the Church on Monday. The Veal family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the kindness and love extended to him during his last few years.
