Hazel L. Underwood

A much loved member of our community entered into eternal rest this morning. Hazel L. Underwood, 80, a native of Jessamine County who was born July 26, 1935 to the late Stephen and Mary Smith McDowell left her earthly home at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center. Hazel was the Executive Director of the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in many projects sponsored by the Chamber. Her organization, persistence, and the love of her community were a major part of her life. She spent many hours to ensure the success of the Jessamine Jamboree, which was a large undertaking and alway a big success. She received the Key to the City of Nicholasville and was a Kentucky Colonel. In addition to her busy public life she always found time for her children JoAnn Ivy, husband Steven, Cissie Litt, husband Ted, Barry Eugene Johns, wife Andrea, grandchildren who were the joy of her life Jordan Carter, wife Kacy, Eric Johns, Jenni Davis, husband Christopher, Ali Litt, Samantha Alexander, Joshua Johns, Nora Johns, Hannah Johns and Shawn Ivy, great grandchildren Clayton Carter, Evey Davis, and Jude Davis. Hazel was one of ten children, eight of whom have preceded her in death, and one surviving sister Bessie Gregg. She has numerous nieces and nephews and a favorite exchange student with whom has stayed in touch with her throughout the years Christina Faelker. Her family will honor her with a Remembrance Service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Feb. 27, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Thurman in Maple Grove Cemetery. Honoring her as pallbearers will be grandsons Eric, Sam, Ted, Christopher, Jordan, and Joshua, as well as Russ Meyer. Honorary bearers will be Ben Brown, Richard Collins, James Hollingsworth and Bernard Brooks. The family will greet friends from 3 to 8 PM on Friday at the funeral home. They suggest contributions be made to Project Village Africa in her memory.
It is an honor to serve Hazel's family.
