Herbert Winston Byrne,Sr. 93, retired minister and educator died on Aug. 5, 2011. Born in Mobile, Alabama, he was the son of the late Peter Cornelius and Emma Cornelia Loving Byrne. He was preceded in death by his wife Nelle Taulbee Byrne, a son Herbert ‘Bert’ Byrne, Jr. and a sister Annie Laurie Westerfield. Survivors include a daughter Betty Byrne Manion, son in law James Edward Manion, a grandson Sean Patrick Byrne Manion, two great grandsons Connor James Manion and Chase Patrick Manion. Dr. Byrne pursued ministerial studies at Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary during which time he pastured a four-point United Methodist Circuit in Preachersville, Kentucky. Later he transferred to the Alabama-West Florida conference where he served several pastorates from 1941 to 1949. While studying to receive his M.S. degree and Ed.D in educational administration, philosophy, and psychology, he served a church in Canton, Illinois. In 1953 Dr. Byrne assumed the position of Chairman of the Department of Christian Education at Western Evangelical Seminary near Portland, Oregon. In 1955 he was called to be the Academic Dean and Professor of Education at Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Shortly after he assumed the position of Academic Dean of Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana. In 1965, he moved to Wilmore, Ky., where he chaired the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Asbury College and served as Acting Dean at Asbury Theological Seminary and Head of the Department of Christian Education. Dr. Byrne shared his experiences and knowledge in a variety of administrative settings: Treasurer of the Evangelical Teacher Placement Agency, Member of the Board of Directors of the Evangelical Teacher Training Association, Dean of Seminar for Improvement of Instruction, Field Consultant for Gospel Light Publications, Scripture Press Publications and David C. Cook Publishing Company and author of several books. He was a tennis and table tennis champion in singles and doubles in college and
seminary and won many tournaments later in life.
Dr. Byrne attended the Wilmore United Methodist Church where visitation will begin at 10:00 AM in Clark Chapel on Tuesday, August 16, with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 AM.
