Janie Katherine Huey Wiley, 98, passed away in her sleep, Thursday morning, April 10, 2008, at Cleburne Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Cleburne, Texas.

She was born to John Lafayette James Huey, MD, and Nora (Virden) Huey in Dyer County, Tennessee on November 8, 1909. Following graduation in 1931 from George Peabody Teachers College (now a part of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tennessee, she taught high school Latin and English in West Tennessee.

Janie Katherine married Robert Farrington Wiley (Asbury College Class of 1925) on August 5, 1936 in her parents’ home in Dyersburg, Tennessee. They had four children: Katherine Anne, Robert Jr., Janie Huey and Joseph Wayne (all of whom graduated from Asbury College).

Janie was a resident of Wilmore, Kentucky for nearly 56 years from 1944 to 2000. She devoted her life to her Lord Jesus Christ, her family, her husband’s ministry, and to the students of Asbury College as well as the high school students of Jessamine and Woodford counties. After retiring she returned to the classroom and substitute taught into her 91st year.

One highlight of her teaching career was celebrating her 82nd birthday in Indonesia at the Wesleyan International School where she taught forty children in grades 1-7 whose parents’ were missionaries, ambassadors and business people.

In 2000 she moved from Wilmore, Kentucky to Centralia, Washington to be near her youngest child, Joe, and his family where she lived in assisted living. After a stroke, she moved to Cleburne, Texas to be in a nursing home next door to her daughter, Janie, and her family. She continued to demonstrate a sweet spirit and love for and devotion to her Lord Jesus until He called her home to be with Him.

She is survived by her son, Robert Farrington Wiley, Jr., MD (a retired thoracic and vascular surgeon) and his wife, Mary Ann (Parsons), of Mansfield, Ohio; daughter Janie Huey (Wiley) Jones, BSN/RN, and her husband, Harold Stephenson (Steve) Jones, Jr., of Cleburne, Texas; son Joseph Wayne Wiley, MD (pediatrician), and his wife, Sharolyn Joye (Unger) Wiley, of Centralia, Washington; 11 grandchildren (5 of whom graduated from Asbury College) and 15 great-grandchildren.

Janie Katherine was preceded in death by her younger half-brother, Lytle Logan, Jr., in the mid 1950’s; one daughter, Katherine Anne (Wiley) Cunigan who died at age 25 in 1963, (whose surviving husband, David Granville Cunigan, is still living); and

husband of 51 years, Robert F. Wiley, Sr. at age 86 in 1987.

There will be a graveside service at the Wilmore Cemetery at 11 AM on April 30, 2008 in Wilmore, Kentucky. A memorial service will be held in Clark Chapel at the United Methodist Church in Wilmore, Kentucky at 2 PM on June 19, 2008.

The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury College, 1 Macklem Drive, Wilmore, Kentucky 40390 for the Robert F.
