Joseph Carr McMurtry, 89, died Thursday, April 26, at his home. He was the widower of Lorraine McMurtry who died in 2006 and native of Jessamine County born May 13, 1922, to the late John Fulton and Alice Reynolds McMurtry. Joe was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, a veteran of the US Army having served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII and was in the first wave at Okinawa during which he was wounded resulting in his receiving 2 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. As a pharmacist he worked for 25 years for Hemphill Pharmacy and 40 years for Drug Mart Pharmacy before retirement of which he was owner . He was a member of the Rotary, Lions, and Sierra Clubs, and the Jessamine Chamber of Commerce from whom he received the Citizen of the Year Award. He is survived by a sister Anne Louise Sharp, a brother John Hunt McMurtry, nieces Mary Beth Sharp Bishop, husband Phillip, Cynthia McMurtry Parker, husband Ray, and nephews Jay McMurtry, wife Jackie, and Carr McMurtry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 1, at St. Luke Catholic Church, burial in Maple Grove Cemetery. Honoring him as pallbearers will be Ben Doyle, Mark Maloney, Ray Parker, Theron Owens, Phillip Bishop, Hunter Daugherty, Jay and Carr McMurtry. Honorary bearers will be Vernon ‘Buddy’ Hager, Dr. Ted Reynolds, Doug Hanson, Joe Swintosky, and Charles Partin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Monday, April 30, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with a Wake Service to be held at 7:30 PM. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Luke Catholic Church.
