Joyce Windle, 83, widow of Douglas B. Windle since 2015, left her earthly home on Saturday, March 24. Joyce was a native of Metter, Georgia and the only daughter of Cecil and Madeline Brown. In 1956 she married Doug and thus began her life adventures. He served in the US Army and also later was employed by IBM which gave her the opportunity to live in many places, one of those places being Colorado where she was a member of the National Campers and Hikers Club. Joyce was a former member of Edgewood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, WMU, and helped with Vacation Bible School and later became a member of the Broadway Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Auxiliary of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War in which her husband was active. Joyce loved reading and teaching others to read and having been a teacher in the Jessamine County school system and at Lexington Community College. After retirement she continued to teach and tutor reading as a volunteer. She loved animals and rescued Roxie and Emily her beloved dogs from the Animal Shelter. Her children Thomas Wayne Windle, wife Becky, Steven Douglas Windle, and Teresa René Estes, husband Terry, as well as her grandchildren Richard Estes and Caitlin Estes and Michael Windle will always treasure the memories they have of her. She also is survived by a great granddaughter Caroline Marie Estes as well as a brother Dennis Brown, wife Cindy and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Jack Brown. A Remembrance Service will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, March 28, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest with her husband in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Honoring Joyce as pallbearers will be Ernie Bain, Terry Estes, Caitlin Estes, Tim Moss, Michael Windle, and Steve Windle. Her family will greet friends starting at 5:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM Tuesday, March 27, at the funeral home. “What the heart has once known it shall never forget. Death takes a life but not a relationship”. Donations may be made to your local animal shelter in honor of Joyce. Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home is honored to serve the Windle family.
