A limb has fallen from the Hammond family tree. There is a voice that says, “ Grieve not for me. Remember the good life I have lived and continue my legacy and traditions, no matter how small.”
Marion Eugene “Poppy” Hammond, Sr., 98, joined his wife Mildred to whom he was married in 1942, in eternal rest. He was a native of Woodford County born Feb. 12, 1919, to the late James Beverly and Minnie Reed Hammond. Poppy was a US Army veteran having served during WWII in England, France, and Germany and received 3 Bronze Stars during this time. He was a well known painter and worked for several different companies, the last being Lexington Clinic from which he retired. He leaves his memories with sons Terry Wayne Hammond and David Alan Hammond, wife Debbie, grandchildren Monica Jane Hammond, Wayne Alan Hammond, Sherry Lynn Hammond Hoover, Brian Wayne Hammond and Steven J. Hammond, great granddaughters April Dawn Bingham, Beverly René Abbott, Bethany Ann Hammond, and Kayla René Parker, 7 great great grandchildren and many other family members, friends and neighbors.He was preceded in death by a son Marion Eugene “Gene” Hammond, Jr., sister Dorothy Mae Miller-Nightingale, and brother Beverly Allen Hammond. A Remembrance Service will be held 1:00 PM on Monday, July 10, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with Rev. Don Reed officiating. He will be laid to rest with his beloved wife in Camp Nelson National Cemetery with full military honors. Honoring him as pallbearers will be Brian Hammond, Steven Hammond, David Long, Kim Reynolds, Calvin Reynolds, and Jerry Barker. Honorary bearers willl be Rev. Benny Baker and Paul Coomer. Poppy’s family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM on Sunday, July 9, at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome but the family would like donations in his memory to be made to Thomson-Hood Veterans Center or to your favorite charity.
