Wilmore: Mary Lee Duncan, Walters Lane departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Lexington Country Place. A native of Jessamine County she was born Oct. 10, 1911 to the late Harrison and Mary B. Sherrow Duncan. She attended a one room county school at Bethel, graduated from Wilmore High School, Asbury College where she majored in English, and from the University of Kentucky with a Masters Degree in Secondary Education. She also attended Eastern Kentucky Teachers College, University of Georgia, Ohio University, and Asbury Seminary. Her teaching career began at the Pearson High School in Pearson, Georgia, teaching general science and math after a year she transferred to Amanda, Ohio, where she became Senior Class advisor, taught English, speech, directed class plays, helped plan and chaperoned class tours through Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City, and Niagara Falls. She also served on many committees and was active in community affairs in Amanda for 11 years at which time she accepted a position with Lancaster City High School System in Lancaster, Ohio. She taught English and related subjects including mass media, mythology, Bible literature, was advisor to the yearbook for 20 years, supervised student teaching, and taught night classes at Ohio University. Mary held a permanent Professional Certificate from Ohio, was a life member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association, member of Asbury College Alumni Association, University of Kentucky Alumni Association, National English Teachers Association, Bronze member of the DAV Commanders Club, and lifetime charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washing D. C. She was one of the first five charter members of The First Baptist Church of Lancaster, Ohio, and a present member of Mt. Freedom Baptist Church in Wilmore where she taught the Ladies Fideli’s Bible Class for 23 years, was Church Historian and served on many committees after retiring in 1974. Her love of people and keen interest in biblical history and world affairs kept her active after her retirement. She designed and supervised the building of a retirement home on Walters Lane where she enjoyed gardening, sports, travel, flowers and hand crafts. Her favorite saying was ‘God has been so good to me’. She was preceded in death by brother Roy A. Duncan, sisters Grace and Alleen Duncan and Margaret D. Johnson and her husband Harley. Survivors include cousins, the Milton Johnson family, special neighbors, and friends. Services will be 1:30 PM Wed. Sept. 15, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with Rev. Don Reed and Rick Maynard officiating. She will be laid to rest at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wed. Sept. 15 until time of service. Sign guest book www.hagerandcundifffunerals.com
