Nelva Jean Abshear, 73, loving wife of Paul Abshear for 48 years went home to be with her Lord and Savior Fri. Dec 2, 2011. She was a native Keyser, WV born Feb. 20, 1938, to the late Walter and Margaret Metcalf, the third of eight children. Nelva was retired from the Jessamine County Board of Education after having taught 33 years and was member of the Retired Teachers Association. She graduated from Keyser High School; Potomac State College and Shepherd College both in WV; and EKU in Richmond, KY. She had served two terms as Nicholasville City Commissioner and was a member of the Edgewood Baptist Church where she attended the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Nelva can best be described as a kind caring person whom was admired by all, one who was always ready to laugh and had a quick smile, but most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and faithful friend. In addition to her husband she is survived by her children Cheryl Brooks, and companion Steve Smith, Jerald Abshear, and Brent Abshear, wife Rita, grandchildren Steven, Sara, and Lane Brooks, and Aidan Abshear, brother Jeffery Metcalf, companion Mary Kesner, sisters Sara Leatherman, husband Philip, Linda Roleff, husband Frank, Judith Myers, husband Bruce, and Sharon Price, sister in law Paulette Metcalf as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Jacob Metcalf, a sister Joyce Mills, and 2 grand nephews Shawn Myers and Owen Parrish.
A service honoring her life will be held 11:00 AM Monday, Dec. 5, at Edgewood Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Scholar officiating and will be laid to rest at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Honoring her as pallbearers will be Mickey Abshear, John Blankenship, Steven and Cameron Brooks, Frank Roleff, Steve Smith, and Wayne Hayden. Honorary bearers will be the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 PM Sunday, Dec. 4, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home.
