The matriarch of the Poor Family, Opal Shirley Poor, joined her beloved husband Donald A. "Peewee” Poor in eternal rest on Dec. 16, 2022.  Shirley was born in Versailles , KY to the late Ray and Gladys Pearl Wilson Sewell on June 23, 1936.  At the age of 2 Shirley went to live with Wade and Gladys O’Connell, who became her second parents until she finished school. In 1957 she and Donald were married, and Shirley became a farmer and homemaker, and in later years a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Family was most important in her life.  In her spare time Shirley would fish and collect dolls. She was a retired employee of Texas Instruments, where she was secretary.  She leaves precious memories  with her son Ricky Poor, wife Linda and her son Cole McCourt and family, grandchildren Derrick Poor, fiancée Alli, Dillan Poor, wife Maddy, great grandchildren Brooks and Wesley Poor, sister Kay Scott, husband Donald, brother Doug Ray Sewell, brother-in-law Curt Poor, wife Gail and their children, niece-in-law Lori Poor, special nephew Billy Wayne Poor, wife Elizabeth, great nephews Wade Poor, wife Allison, and Noah Poor, wife Lindsey, great nieces Crystal June Blackmer, husband Joey, Bobbi Michelle Blackmer, husband Josh, Alicia Warren, and cousin Charles Hahn and his family, the family of Betty Stevens, as well as many extended family members and friends that meant so much to her. Special thanks to "Lady Bug" Sheila Johnson and Linda Poor, who provided great care for Shirley! She was preceded in death by sisters June Lavone Poor and her husband Billy Ray Poor, Patricia Vollmer, a sister-in-law Betty Stevens and her husband Alvin, special nephew Mike Poor, great-nephew Ryan Miller, and cousin Joan Hahn. A Funeral Remembrance will be held 1:00 PM on Wednesday Dec. 21, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Murphy presiding, with burial following in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.  Honoring her as pallbearers will be Derrick, Dillan, Billy Wayne, Noah and Wade Poor, and Cole McCourt. Honorary bearers will be Derrick Reeves. Robert Bruner, Craig Todd, Stanton Richardson, Bob and James Humphrey, and Kevin Adams.  The family will greet friends on Wednesday beginning at 10:00 AM until time of Service.  Donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association.  “But we remember now in love, your life from start to end, and we’re glad we knew you as Mother and as Friend.”  Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home values nothing more than the trust and loyalty given to us to care for the Poor family.
