Robert Ira Mathews

Robert Ira Mathews, 77, passed into the presence of our Lord on August 24, 2010. He was the son of the late Pleas and Fanny Dean Corman Mathews. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wava Waits Mathews, son Jeffrey Glenn Mathews of Nicholasville, granddaughters Emily Hope Moore of Versailles, and Holly Rebecca Moore of South Carolina, sister Marjorie Holder of Dallas, TX, brothers Kenneth and his wife Phyllis of Louisville, and David and his wife Edith of Lexington. He was preceded in death by his son Alan Dean and his daughter Mary Ellen, brother John Mathews and his wife Catherine, and sister Marita Nelson and her husband Gary.

He was a 1951 graduate of Wilmore High School, and then entered the Air Force serving until 1956. He was then employed by the FAA as an air traffic controller in positions in Oklahoma City, Memphis, TN, Fayetteville and Raleigh, NC, and Knoxville, TN before being assigned to Lexington in 1967. He retired as assistant chief in Lexington in 1982. He was then employed by Lone Oak country club as manager, followed by heading the school bus driver training for Jessamine County schools. Volunteer activities included President of Jessamine County Hospice, Deacon with Southland Christian Church, Chairman of Lone Oak country club, and member of the City of Nicholasville Board of Adjustment. He enjoyed golf and travel, and visiting with loving friends and family.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. with the funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. at Hager and Cundiff in Nicholasville. Burial will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetary at 12:30 p.m., Rev.
