Sally Ferne Van Horn

Sally Fern Van Horn, 92, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Nov. 13, at St. Joseph Hospital East. A native of Pennsylvania she was born Sept. 29, 1922, to the late Lyle Merrick and Thyrza Carpenter Ferris. She was the loving wife of John for 71 years during which they shared many wonderful memories. She was a student at the Keuka College in New York where she made aquaintance with Eleanor Roosevelt and during that time experienced lots of opportunities such as the time she danced with Glen Miller and bumped into Artie Shaw on a street corner. She worked in the War Department during WWII, was employed by Mineral Management Systems in Anchorage, Alaska as a secretary. Being a very gifted as an administrative assistant she proved herself to be very valuable in her field and later joined the staff at Huskey Oil where she spent 5 years on the North Slope in Alaska. A talented pianist and organist she played at many churches. Sally was the dedicated Mother to her children Kathleen Huggins, husband Don, Lyle Van Horn, wife Marilyn and Craig Van Horn wife Patricia, grandmother of 6 grandchildren John, Michael Lindley, and Lt. Col. Gary A. Kerr, Mark, Andrew, and Daniel Van Horn, as well as 12 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves many special memories with a dear friend and co worker Dr. Moody C "Bud" Thompson of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother. A Memorial of her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Nov. 21, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. Her family will greet friends before the Memorial at 1:00 PM. Donations may be made in her memory to the Disabled Veterans of America. Hager and Cundiff Funeral Home is honored to serve the Van Horn family.
