April 20, 1931 - January 27, 2016
A limb from the Lee family tree was broken on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016. The departure of Sanford Julian "PopPop" Lee from his earthly home will be felt by many since he was a very giving, loving, and lively person in our community. He and his soul mate and loving wife of 62 years Shirley, had a full life of entertaining. Their house always had an open door with a saying of Enter As A Stranger-Leave As Friends. They enjoyed boating, horseback riding gardening and playing music at different locations in and around Lexington including Renfro Valley, the Pioneer Playhouse, and Frontier Theater, and spending time with their family. Having been in the tire business since the early fifties he founded Lee Tire which is still operating today even after his retirement. He was given a key to the City of Nicholasville and recognized for his participation in the Christmas parties for the Fire and Police Departments. He was a member of the Jessamine Christian Church, Nicholasville Citizen's Police Academy, a Kentucky Colonel and a US Navy Veteran in the Korean War. Julian was born April 20, 1931, to the late Virgil Sanford and Julia Jolly Lee Hellerd in Harrison County and grew up in Carlisle and Cynthiana. He leaves his legacy with daughters Jodi Lynn Lee (Burton) Butler, and Julianne Lee (Randy)Huston, sons James William (Eleanor) Lee and Sanford Edward (Sue Wight) Lee, grandchildren Brooke Butler (Larry) Ritchey, Lauren Butler (Matthew) Jones, Burton Jay Butler II, Morgan Ashlee Butler, James Marshall Edward Lee, Allison Lee (Chris) Haas, and Hannah Lee Huston, great grandchildren Alexander James Lee, Emma Elizabeth Lee, Jackson Louis Jones, Baylee Elizabeth Jones, and Liam Vaughn Haas. He also leaves his memories with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Sheryl Alice Lee and stepfather Marion Delbert Hellard. A Remembrance Memorial will be held 10:30 AM Monday, Feb. 1, at Jessamine Christian Church and Entombment will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Honorary Pallbearers will be Barton Foster, Jack Skrezec, Joseph Cherepowich, and Kevin Corman. The Lee family will greet friends from 4 to 8 PM on Sunday, Jan. 31, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. Flowers are welcome but the family suggest donations be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital. Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home is honored to serve the Lee family.
