Nicholasville: Sherman Dean, Jr. 83, of North Third St. died Sat. Feb. 17, at Royal Manor Nursing Home. He was a native of Jessamine County Born Sept. 2, 1923, to the late Sherman and Margaret Griffing Dean. He was born and raised on the farm he later named the Rolling Hills Simmental Farm on Sugar Creek Pike. He attended Wesley Chapel as a young child where he received a pin for attending Sunday School for 13 years without missing a Sunday and later joined Little Hickman Christian Church where he served as an Elder. His main passion was farming, breeding, raising and showing Simmental cattle. He served on the Jessamine County School Board during the sixties, was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Jessamine County Fair Board.

He had also been a partner in the McClary and Dean Inssurance Agency for several years. Sherman was elected and served as Jessamine County Judge Executive from 1978 to 1990 during which time he was instrumental in the Nicholasville By-Pass and in obtaining federal grants for Jessamine County. He was a strong supporter of the Jessamine County Fire Department and the Little League Baseball and was a key advocate in establishing the baseball field. The Jessamine County Fiscal Court recently honored him by naming on the County building the Wilson-Dean Building. He was described as a man of integrity and kindness. He was a great Dad and Granddaddy.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth ‘Litty’ Stipe Young Dean, step children Teresea Canter and Linda Burton and husband Mdark, son in law Freddie Orange and wife Sherie, a sister Dorothy Hager, 5 step grandchildren Rick Orange, Katie Canter Barnes and husband Brandon, Will Canter, Hannah Burton, and Tyler Burton, a step great granddaughter Audrey Claire Orange, 2 nephews Lyman Hager, Jr. and wife Jackie and Gary Dean Hager and wife Jan, 2 great nephews Benjamin Hager and Jarron Hager and a great niece Caroline Hager. He was preceded in death by a step daughter Audrey Orange, son in law Marvin Canter and brother in law Lyman Hager.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM Wed., Feb. 21, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Baltzer officiating, burial in Maple Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tyler Burton, Will Canter, Rick Orange, Brandon Barnes, Freddie Orange, Lyman Hager, Jr., Gary Dean Hager, and Mark Burton. Honorary bearers will be Hannah Burton, Howard Downing, Phyllis Bradshaw, Katie Canter Barnes, Mildred Miller, Sid East, Randy East, Hudson Belcher, Ray Belcher, Elgan Bruner, Johnny Walker, A. G. Canter and the men at Little Hickman Church.

Visitation will be Mon., Feb. 19, from 3 to 8 PM and Tues., Feb. 20, from 3 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home and on Wed. from 11:00 AM until time of service. Donations may be made in his memory to the Little Hickman Christian Church. View tribute and sign guest book at hagerandcundifffunerals.com
