Vernon "Buddy" Hager, 90, husband of 65 years to Pauline "Polly" Sparks Hager entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 14, 2014. Buddy was a native of Jessamine County born July 15, 1923, to the late Arch L. Sr. and Myrtie Ann House Hager. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy, Class of 1949, after which he and Joe McMurty purchased Hemphill Drug Store located on the corner of Main and Maple Streets in Nicholasville. They remained in business together for many years and later separated their partnership. Hemphill was noted for its fountain and many children visited the store to read the latest comic books as well as get ice cream, shakes and the many items that were offered by sitting at the fountain. Buddy was involved in the community as he was past president of the Rotary Club, the Jessamine Chamber of Commerce,and was a Charter member of the Lone Oak Country Club where enjoyed many games of golf. He was also a member of the Bluegrass Pharmaceutical Association, the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Association and also served 5 years on the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy. He was a member of the Nicholasville United Methodist Church. He leaves memories with his wife Polly, daughter Jandira Hager Shelley, her companion Rick McCarthy, grandson Caleb Taylor Shaw, his twin sister Marie Preston, sister-in-law Vivian Sparks Young her son David, his son Austin, her daughter Leslie, husband Michael McCoskey, as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers C.R., Lyman, Arch L., Jr., and Elesteen and sisters Thelma Cobb, Eudell Cobb, and Flossie Hayden, and brother-in-law George Young. Buddy's family would like to extend their gratitude to his great niece Sherry Gibson and Hospice of the Bluegrass for the special care that has been extended to the family. A Remembrance for Buddy will be held 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 22, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday. Contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Bluegrass or Nicholasville United Methodist Church.
