Richard Palmer, 82, of Sadieville, departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 20, in his barn in the company of his beloved horses. He was a native of Lee County, born May 16, 1932, to the late Clay and Ada Brandenburg Palmer. He and his wife of 63 years lived and farmed in Central Kentucky for many years. He was an avid horseman and rider it has been said he probably forgot more about horses than most people ever knew. He was an expert in training, breaking, and breeding. He provided horses and appeared in several movies filmed in the area such as the FlimFlam Man, Great Race and Black Beauty. He also cut timber during the building of I 75 at Clays Ferry which earned him the nickname of Walnut Log because he could pick out Walnut trees from a distance. His love of riding and horses and the friends he had that shared this passion he became instrumental in the formation of the Booneville Trail & Wagon Ride which still exist today. He also provided the team of mules and the plow "Horsepower" for the Ground Breaking Ceremony at the Kentucky Horse Park where his picture is on display in their Museum. He leaves his memories with his wife, sons W.R. Palmer, Coy Palmer, wife Kathy Jo, and daughter Kim Palmer-Moberly, husband Dwayne, his granddaughter who was the apple of his eye Sara Palmer Moberly, step grandchildren Alex and Shelby Moberly, his nieces and nephew and the many friends he enjoyed being a part of his life. He was preceded in death by a grandson Adam Coy Palmer, 2 sisters and a brother. His family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held in the Palmer Cemetery in Lee County on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM when a Service will be held before he is laid to rest. Honoring him as pallbearers will be John Porter, John Ballard, Aaron Bullock, Jonathan Smith Alex Moberly, Dale and Jason Cole. Honorary bearers will be Jr. Cole, Dorsey Ratliff, Roy Ballard, Larry, Roger, and Jr. Deaton, as well as all those who enjoyed riding horses with Richard. He will be carried by horse and wagon the last mile before reaching the Cemetery. The following are directions to the Palmer Cemetery. Take Hwy. 52 from Beattyville toward Jackson, KY approximately 91/2 to 10 miles, turn right onto 708 and cross river bridge, first road on right turn right (Coal Branch Rd), at the top of the hill turn left (sign Palmer Cemetery) there will be a funeral Cone beside of Road. Follow road to left.

Hwy 52 from Beattyville toward Jackson for about 10 miles turn right onto 708 and cross river bridge, first road on right turn right (Coal Branch Road), top of hill turn left, at Palmer Cemetery, funeral cone will be beside road. Follow road to left.
