77, of Handy’s Bend Road, died Thurs. April 6, at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center. He was a native of Jessamine County born Aug. 27, 1928, to the late Launey T. and Eural Blakeman Wells and the widower of Sonya Southworth Wells who died in 2001. Billy was a member of the Nicholasville Baptist Church, a life long farmer, and a graduate of Wilmore High School where he played on the first Jessamine County high school baseball team. This began his love of baseball and he continued with coaching for 25 years in the Stan Mussel semi-pro league, Connie Mack, and Babe Ruth leagues. He loved gathering with family and friends and telling stories of his childhood, Jessamine County, his travels, and his baseball experiences.

Survivors include 3 children W. D. Wells, Jr. and friend Shirley Boyd, April Sallee and husband Bobby, and Kevin Wells and wife Debbie, 3 sisters Doryce Wells Wise, Joyce Wells Withers, and Anna Kay Wells Allison, 9 grandchildren Keith Wells, Timmy Wells, Kim Wells Allen, Heather Sallee Irvin, Shaun Wells, Tara Wells, Troy Sallee, Scotty Harrison and Ashley Sallee, 8 great grandchildren Justin Burdine, Tamara Wells, Mathew Jacob Burdine, Maggie Lee Irvin, Michelle and Sabrina Harrison, Bailey Nicole Wells, and Lane Grace Hart, and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:00 PM Mon., April 10, at HAGER & CUNDIFF FUNERAL HOME, W. Oak St. with the Rev. David Hewitt officiating, burial in Maple Grove Cemetery. Grandsons, Steve Withers, Nevel Wise, and Donnie Welch will serve as Pallbearers. Granddaughters, Wayne Southworth, Tommy Southworth, Gene Marshbanks, Charles Moores, Richard Clem, Bobby Shropshire, Larry Dock, Denton Ross, Raymond Hayes, James Ray Davis, Bill Russell, Scotty Haines, Jeff White, Mike Corey, Mike Maddox, Alvin Haines, Carl Puckett, Billy Adams, Daniel Wells, Dwight Wells, Gene Walker, John Hunter Yates, Steve Clark, Glen Tucker, and Sharon Reynolds will be Honorary Pallbearers. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sat., April 8 from 4 to 8 PM and Sun., April 9, from 1 to 5 PM. Contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Bluegrass, Jessamine County chapter.
