Walter T. ‘W.T.’ Brumfield, Sr, 89, passed away on Sat. Dec. 11, at the St. Joseph Hospice Care Center. He was a native of Jessamine County born March 27, 1921, to the late Buford and Sarah Sanders Brumfield. He was the widower of Loretta Corman Brumfield to whom he was married to for 56 years who died in 1997. W.T. was a US Army veteran having served in WWII and was the first Allied soldier in Cherbourg where he captured 7 German soldiers single handed. He received the Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation for wounds he sustained in France along with many other accommodations for his bravery during his time of service. His service inspired him to belong to the V.F.W., was a lifetime member American Legion Post 063, and the Disabled American Veterans. After returning from the service in 1948 he joined the Nicholasville Volunteer Fire Department thus began a legacy of family firefighters which includes his son retired chief Charlie Brumfield,son Battilion Chief Mark Brumfield, and grandsons present Nicholasville Fire Chief Charles E. ‘Bubba’ Brumfield and Deputy Fire Chief of Danville Timothy Brumfield. In 1955 he was appointed Chief of the Nicholasville Fire Department and served in that capacity for 33 years. During his time at the Nicholasville Fire Department he was very active in the Central Kentucky Firefighters Association of which he served as president, held many other offices and was appointed to various committees. He served on the Governors Committee on Safety and received one of the first certificates awarded by the University of Kentucky for completion of a 4 year course, was very instrumental in forming what is now the Jessamine County Fire District, and in 2006 was inducted into the Firefighters Hall of Fame. W.T. was a Kentucky Colonel and a long time member of the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children Walter T. Brumfield, Jr. wife Judy, retired Fire Chief Charles W. Brumfield, wife Brenda, Mark Brumfield and partner Mike Arnold, grandchildren Cynthia Leasor, husband Mark, Fire Chief Charles E. ‘Bubba’ Brumfield, wife Mitzi, Karen O’Connell husband Patrick, Dr. Jeffery Brumfield, wife DeeDee, Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Brumfield, fiance` Dedra, great grand children Jacob,Ryan, Meagan, Kelli,Elyse and Thomas Brumfield, Benjamin and Kate O’Connell, Mathew and McKenzie Leasor, great great grandson Brayden Noel, sisters Mildred Walker, Meredith Owens, husband Elwood, Ann Glass, husband Bill and Neva Jean Allison, numerous nieces and nephews. and a loyal constant companion his dog Skeetz. He was preceded in death by brothers Merritt, Oakley and Moss Brumfield and sisters Carmen Shawler, Lovie Craig, and Ruby Hager.

Services will be 1:00 PM Firday, Dec. 17, at Edgewood Baptist Church with Pastor Sean Shroll and Chaplain Dan Barnes officiating. He will be laid to rest with his wife at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Honoring him as pallbearers will be Charles E. , Timothy, and Jeffery Brumfield, Mark Leasor, Tommy Cobb, and Patrick O’Connell. Honorary bearers will be Richard Bogard, Elmer Congleton, his nieces and nephews and friends at Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 PM Wed. and Thurs. at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home and from 11 AM until time of service at the Church.
